What is a Kalimba?
Kalimba is an African musical instrument that has thin metal keys mounted on a wooden soundbox. The mounted keys have different lengths to produce different chords.
Kalimbas can have anywhere between 5 and 21 keys to play with but most of them on the market have 17 keys. They are also set to a specific tone and the Standard one is the Key of C. The instrument is also called thumb piano because the performers strike the keys with their thumbs while holding the soundbox in their hands.
Songs can be played by using kalimba tabs which you can find on the Kalimbeo website. You will find a huge collection of tabs covering songs from wide variety of genres.
In case you need a tutorial for a specific song, you can contact us. We will try to prepare the tabs and will publish it as soon as possible.
How to read Kalimba tabs?
As mentioned Kalimbeo website provides tabs using number and letter notation. For every song that is available on the website, both of these notations are always provided.
Numbered notation is using a numbering system and each kalimba tine has an associated number which is typically printed on the tines. This notation is read from left to right.
Letter notation is using a letter system and each kalimba tine has an associated letter which is typically printed on the tines. This notation is also read from left to right.
It is down to a personal preference which of these notations will be used to read the kalimba tabs.
General Tips
Note that some songs are more complicated and require a lot of experience. The standard tuning required for most of the songs is C major. The different tuning, required by some of the songs, will be indicated on the top of the kalimba tabs tutorial (Check this example).
The higher tabs will be indicated with the following sign: °. When there is a need to play 2, 3 or more keys simultaneosly, brackets will be used to indicate that (e.g. (2° 2) means that 2° and 2 key should be pressed at the same time. For an example, check these tabs).
